The idea for a corn maze started in 1999, when we decided to offer more for families to participate in while they were visiting, both from an activity standpoint and from an educational perspective.
We grew a small corn maze that year, but it was simply an "experimental" idea to see what kind of interest there was.
There was plenty of interest, but no idea on our part how to design a worthwhile maze and market it effectively.
That's when we went on the hunt for some professional help and found Brett Herbst and his company, "The MAiZE" out of Utah.
Herbst's company has now become the world's largest corn maze company, attracting more than 1,000,000 maze-goers since its inception six years ago.
It was important for us to come up with a "theme" of sorts, and when our original idea of a dairy cow was taken by one of Herbst's other clients, we came up with Mount Rainier in 2001.
In 2001, (and in the future) we asked for the public's input for a maze, and a medieval castle won out from close 200 entries and 100 ideas!
With Herbst's guidance and encouragement, we are excited to bring to Washington and Pierce County this world class family attraction.
